Colouring service paths by frequency
The color-by-frequency feature for service paths enables easy visualisation of services with high and low service frequencies.
The colour-by-frequency feature provides a fast, intuitive way to understand how frequently services in your network operate - turning complex schedules into clear, visual insights.
Frequency colour mode is particularly useful for:
-
Network reviews and presentations
- Communicating service frequencies across your network to stakeholders
- Identifying corridors with high frequency bus services operating along them to prioritise for upgrades or investment
- Spotting gaps or inconsistencies in service provision
How Average Frequency is Calculated
For each service, Podaris calculates average frequency in terms of vehicles per hour (VPH) by:
-
Counting the number of scheduled vehicle trips for the service during the time period specified
- Dividing by the total time span (in hours) of the time period being considered
The project clock sets the time range used to calculate the average frequency displayed.
Note: Average frequency is calculated per route, not per individual trip or pattern.
How to Colour by Frequency
To colour routes in your network by frequency:
- Navigate to the display settings located in the control bar at the top of your screen. Clicking on the display settings icon will bring up the display menu.
- From here, select 'Paths' and scroll down to the 'Services' section

- Set the path color within the services section to be by 'Average Frequency'. Your map will update to color the routes by their average frequency:

- The edit attribute styling button
can be used to customise the colour scheme and opacity, set the legend title and toggle visibility. Within this you can also adjust the classes to customize the frequency thresholds used.
Clicking the “eye” icon next to each class, toggles the visibility and allows you to make certain classes hidden.
Additionally, the display order of classes is sortable. Classes can be dragged and dropped to control the order they are displayed in on the map and in the legend. This is helpful in cases where you encounter lots of routes overlapping one another.
