[Terminology](https://support.podaris.com/scheduled-services?hsLang=en#terminology) # Waypoints ## Waypoints can be used to define locations through which a pattern will travel, allowing you to create detours to routes without slowing your vehicles. Waypoints share many of the same properties as stations, and can be created with the station tool, however, unlike stations, they do not cause vehicles to slow down and stop, and dwell times specified in your layer's [transport layer properties](https://support.podaris.com/understanding-layers?hsLang=en) are not applied to them. Waypoints can be created with either the [station tool](https://support.podaris.com/station-tool?hsLang=en) or during the [pattern drawing](https://support.podaris.com/service-patterns?hsLang=en)and editing process, by clicking the ![cog](https://support.podaris.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Feb-08-2021-01-21-20-04-AM.png?width=32&name=image-png-Feb-08-2021-01-21-20-04-AM.png) next to the station that you wish to turn into a waypoint. ![Tool services](https://support.podaris.com/hubfs/image-png-Feb-08-2021-01-16-28-94-AM.png) From here, select *waypoint* as your station kind and click OKAY. ![Station settings](https://support.podaris.com/hubfs/image-png-Feb-08-2021-01-13-36-23-AM.png) ### Using Waypoints In this example, we're going to create a detour by creating a station, connecting to our pattern and turning it into a waypoint. Here we have added a new station, *station 6.*  ![Adding a station](https://support.podaris.com/hubfs/image-png-Mar-22-2021-12-19-22-81-AM.png) While editing our [pattern,](https://support.podaris.com/step-4.-defining-a-pattern?hsLang=en) we can CTRL + click on the dashed line and drag to connect it to our new station. ![Connecting a station](https://support.podaris.com/hubfs/waypoint-gif.gif) The new station has been now been added in the pattern between stations 2 and 3. Within the pattern editor, we can now click on the settings cog to bring up the **station settings.** ![Station settings](https://support.podaris.com/hubfs/image-png-Mar-22-2021-12-24-29-00-AM.png) Here, we can change the station *kind* from station to waypoint. ![Changing a station to a waypoint](https://support.podaris.com/hubfs/image-png-Mar-22-2021-12-25-10-62-AM.png) As we can see in the pattern editor, this has had an effect on the runtime of the pattern.
